Paintings 2022-2023
Currently, I am working on two bodies of work. In one, I have begun to incorporate compositional elements from my early influences in painting, such as pre-Hispanic glyphs and geometric shapes from the Maya and Aztec cultures. I have reintroduced, from my earliest works, a continuous painted line that twists and turns in multiple directions that I call the “tree of life”. This tree represents the multiple paths that we can take in our lives. Now the characters depicted in my paintings have become a hybrid between a cartoon character and a Maya or Aztec god or deity. My tree of life lines have changed scale and have become large abstract shapes that are an intrinsic part of the composition. These new characters emerge and become alive in an environment influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and pre-Hispanic motifs.
